Taurus is a Venus-ruled earth sign that values comfort, loyalty and things that last. Its modern stone is emerald, the lush green beryl long associated with Venus and with spring, the season Taurus occupies. Ancient zodiac tables gave Taurus sapphire instead.

Green and pink stones dominate the Taurus list. Rose quartz mirrors the sign's Venusian warmth, malachite's banded green is traditionally linked to growth and change for a sign that resists both, and green aventurine is the everyday stone many Taureans keep at their desk or in a wallet.

How to tell real Emerald at a glance

  • Color: Green, Bluish Green, Yellowish Green. Look at a clean, dry surface in daylight. Color zoning, banding or spots are as diagnostic as the hue.
  • Luster: Vitreous. Fresh surfaces shine like glass; a dull surface usually means weathering, so chip or wet a corner.
  • Transparency: Transparent. Hold a thin edge up to a bright light and note whether light passes through.
  • Mohs hardness: 7.5. It scratches glass, steel and even quartz; only harder gems will mark it.
