Capricorn is the Saturn-ruled earth sign of the mountain goat: patient, ambitious and built for the long climb. Garnet, the January birthstone that travelers once carried for safe passage, is its modern stone. Ruby appears as the traditional Capricorn stone in older tables.

Grounding stones fill out the list. Black onyx is the classic Capricorn crystal for focus and self-control, smoky quartz is traditionally used to let go of stress after a long week of work, and malachite's growth rings suit a sign that measures progress in years.

How to tell real Garnet at a glance

  • Color: Red, Orange, Green, Purple, Brown. Look at a clean, dry surface in daylight. Color zoning, banding or spots are as diagnostic as the hue.
  • Luster: Vitreous. Fresh surfaces shine like glass; a dull surface usually means weathering, so chip or wet a corner.
  • Transparency: Transparent. Hold a thin edge up to a bright light and note whether light passes through.
  • Mohs hardness: 7. It scratches glass and a steel knife and cannot be scratched by a steel file.
