Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, a Mars-ruled fire sign known for drive, courage and a short fuse. Its modern stone is diamond, the hardest material on Earth, a fitting match for a sign that does not back down. The traditional Aries stone is bloodstone, the dark green chalcedony flecked with red that Roman soldiers carried into battle.

Warm red and orange stones are the classic supporting crystals for Aries. Carnelian is traditionally carried for stamina and follow-through, red jasper for steady endurance when the initial burst of energy fades, and cool aquamarine is often suggested as a counterweight to help an Aries pause before acting.

How to tell real Diamond at a glance

  • Color: Colorless, Yellow, Blue, Pink, Black. Look at a clean, dry surface in daylight. Color zoning, banding or spots are as diagnostic as the hue.
  • Luster: Adamantine. Fresh surfaces shine like glass; a dull surface usually means weathering, so chip or wet a corner.
  • Transparency: Transparent. Hold a thin edge up to a bright light and note whether light passes through.
  • Mohs hardness: 10. It scratches glass, steel and even quartz; only harder gems will mark it.
