How to Identify Spodumene
Spodumene is usually pink, lilac, and green with a vitreous luster and is transparent. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.75. It scratches glass and a steel knife and cannot be scratched by a steel file. Its streak is white. It is most often confused with Beryl, Diopside, and Quartz; the tests below separate them.

Spodumene is harder (Mohs 6.75) than Natrolite (Mohs 5.5), so Spodumene will scratch Natrolite and not the other way round. It is about as hard as window glass: a knife barely marks it, while a steel file (Mohs 6.5) will.
Field tips
- Look for flattened prismatic crystals with perfect prismatic cleavage and faint vertical striations.
- Pale pink-lilac or green transparent crystals from pegmatites are strong indicators of gem spodumene.
- Hardness near 6.5 to 7 and the pegmatite setting help separate it from softer pink minerals.
