How to Identify Beryl
Beryl forms hexagonal prisms with flat basal terminations, showing a vitreous luster and a white streak regardless of body color. Hardness of 7.5 to 8 helps separate it from softer look-alikes such as apatite or fluorite, and its lack of visible cleavage combined with a conchoidal fracture is another useful clue. Color alone is unreliable for identification since beryl spans colorless, green, blue, pink, and yellow varieties, so crystal form and hardness testing remain the most dependable field checks, especially where beryl might be mistaken for quartz or tourmaline.
