How to Identify Aventurine
Aventurine has a granular, sugary texture typical of quartzite, with an overall vitreous luster punctuated by a metallic-looking sparkle from included mica flakes. It leaves a white streak and has a hardness near 7, matching quartz, and it lacks a single cleavage direction, instead breaking with a conchoidal to uneven fracture along grain boundaries. Green material can be confused with jade or dyed quartzite, but tilting a specimen under strong light to spot individual glinting fuchsite flakes usually confirms genuine aventurine.
