How to Identify Halite

Halite forms colorless to white cubic crystals, sometimes tinted pink, orange, or blue by impurities or radiation damage, with a vitreous luster and perfect cubic cleavage in three directions. It has a distinctly salty taste, a genuinely diagnostic field test unique among common minerals, and a hardness of only 2 to 2.5. Streak is white, and it dissolves readily in water. Halite can resemble sylvite, but sylvite tastes more bitter and is noticeably lighter in specific gravity.

Glass check. Halite shares a glassy luster and conchoidal fracture with man-made glass. Glass sits near Mohs 5.5 and often contains round gas bubbles, so a hardness test and a hand lens separate them.
