How to Identify Glauconite

Glauconite appears as distinctive dull to dark olive-green, occasionally bluish-green, rounded pellets or earthy grains, typically too fine-grained to show obvious crystal faces, with a dull to earthy luster and a pale green to greenish-white streak. It has a hardness of only 2 to 2.5 and behaves as a soft, somewhat greasy clay mineral when scratched, occurring mixed into sandstone or as loose sand rather than forming visible crystals. It is most often confused with chlorite or other green clay minerals, but glauconite's classic pelletal habit within marine sandstone, along with its association with fossiliferous shelf deposits, is a strong diagnostic clue.
