How to Identify Bismuth

Bismuth appears as a silvery-white metal that quickly develops an iridescent tarnish of pink, yellow, and blue hues, with a metallic luster and a gray to silvery-white streak. It is soft, with a hardness of about 2 to 2.5, easily marked with a knife or coin, and it shows one perfect cleavage direction. Natural material typically forms granular or reticulated masses rather than the stepped, colorful hopper crystals seen in synthetic specimens. It can be confused with native antimony or arsenic, though its brilliant tarnish colors are usually diagnostic on their own.
