How to Identify Rhyolite
Rhyolite is typically light-colored, ranging from pale gray and tan to pink and reddish-brown, with a fine-grained to glassy texture in which individual crystals are usually too small to identify without a hand lens, aside from occasional visible quartz or feldspar phenocrysts. Its overall hardness runs around 6 to 7, reflecting its quartz and feldspar content, and it commonly shows flow banding, streaky layers formed as viscous lava moved before solidifying. Rhyolite is distinguished from basalt by its pale color and much higher silica content, and from granite by its fine grain size, since the two share nearly identical mineral compositions but cooled at vastly different rates.
